What's left of the group escapes with serious losses to their numbers and morality. The rest of the film carries itself out in a tragically predictable manner. There's a final courtroom scene in which one of the protagonists pleads his case with a decidedly unliberal judge, (played, with knowing irony, by Martin Sheen.)
